Location Independence Is Possible — How a community is a key to success

In the Find Calm Here Community, the concept of “Location Independence” comes up pretty often during our LIVE Virtual, Interactive events.

For one reason, many of our Find Calm Here Partners are already living a life they’ve built to allow them to travel and live life on their own terms.

Deb Schell, Founder of Find Calm Here

Not only am I now location independent, but the idea for the weekly events, private community, and support groups within our community was inspired by a community that helped me on my path to leave my corporate job, Location Indie.

Find Calm Here is an online community offering resources to learn, grow, and build mindful habits by hosting virtual events and cultivating conversations around meditation, yoga, essential oils, massage, self-care, healthy lifestyles, minimalism, organization, building resilience, stress management, and positive mindsets focused on helping you find calm.

Next Wednesday, October 7th we are excited to invite you to join us with our FCH Partner, Rachel Story, who will share her journey to teaching while traveling the world. Here’s the link to register for the upcoming call.

Want to learn more about Location Indie’s beginnings?

Check out the story I wrote, (first published here two years ago) interviewing Co-Founder Travis Sherry and sharing member experiences. I also wrote a blog post about my experience meeting the crew for the first time. You can read that story here.

Are you looking to ditch the 9–5 and opt-in for world travel? A new group called Location Indie will connect you with this Mighty Network of people who inspire, support, and challenge you to trade office life for one full of travel and adventure.

Travis Sherry, Co-Founder of Location Indie, learned the secrets of frequent flyer miles, earning over 2 million miles, and traveling to over 25 countries. He started Extra Pack of Peanuts to share this knowledge with the world and create an online business that he could run from anywhere.

He met Jason Moore, Co-Founder of LI, at the 2013 World Domination Summit Conference in Portland and a friendship was born. Moore, who hosts a popular Zero to Travel podcast and provides travel tips on his website, shared Sherry’s passion for helping others. Moore breaks down ways to get paid to travel, trading to travel, and interviews lifestyle business owners who have discovered how to surf couches, house sit, and travel on a budget. Between the two, each had successful and sustainable businesses, but both lacked a community connection with others like themselves.

Their first business venture together was creating the Paradise Pack, a travel education bundle offered annually to people who want tools to become location independent. In June of 2014, less than three months after the idea of the Paradise Pack, they launched a new product into the market.

Following the success of the first pack, Sherry and Moore decided to continue an annual launch and recognized their mutual desire to create a platform for people who were working through the courses. That’s how Location Indie started, opening up for members to connect in February of 2015, following the launch of the second Paradise Pack.

“One of my dreams was to create a platform where people could list their dreams and a community of people with common interests and goals would support others towards their goal to be location independent,” said Sherry.

Now that dream is a reality, with just under 300 members all over the world. LI was created by Sherry and Moore in one dedicated week where they locked themselves in a beach house in Ocean City New Jersey during the offseason to create the platform. What started as a forum has morphed into a team of people helping to grown the community. With help in planning and implementing the community, they hope to continue growing while leaning into the challenges of running a social media platform.

They held their second live, in-person event in 2018, in Denver, Colorado, bringing over 30 members and the LI staff together to connect, create ideas, help each other find solutions, and explore Denver’s breweries, farmers market, and take in a baseball game, all well making that community bond stronger by having members who’ve connected online and now in person.

“There’s something really remarkable and beautiful that happens when you meet people in person that you’ve been surrounding yourself in an online community, working within mastermind groups, and consulting each other on business ideas and opportunities,” said Heath Armstrong, a Portland-based author.

Armstrong “retired” from his job and shifted to full-time location independence in just over 2 years. Since then, he has become debt-free, built an automated $60K per month business, sold his house, and is now his own boss. He recently published a book, the Sweet Ass Journal to Develop Your Happiness Muscle in 100 Days, and companion, The Sweet Ass Domination Deck — 60 Hilarious, Unfiltered Motivational Affirmation cards.

Armstrong found Moore while conducting interviews with more than 100 creative and entrepreneurs on bringing the dreams to life. He is now living that life each day and producing products to help motivate and inspire others to create.

“You can help inspire each other in a way that you can’t ever feel through the computer screen,” Armstrong said. “We can create things and have ideas that we can’t get on our own, it’s magical, the community… that’s what lights me up.”

Jason Robinson, a graphic designer from North Carolina turned world traveler says he joined Location Indie for the community support. He shares his experience on his Nomadic Experiment website with videos and travel pro tips.

“By joining LI, I could surround myself with people who helped provide resources to get to the next level of my journey,” Robinson said. “I also wanted to connect with people to travel with, and now some of my closest friends are within LI but somewhere around the world most of the time.”

LI opens for new members three times a year and is a monthly subscription that includes webinars, accountably partners within the community, as well as collaboration and skill-building.

“We’ve found that successful location independent people thrive when we surround ourselves with others who are challenging us and being supportive,” said Sherry. “That’s what we want to bring people together to offer them, a place where they can feel that sense of community.”

I hope to see you at our upcoming event, Find Calm with Location Independence, and check out our YouTube Channel for more videos and interviews with our partners and community members who share how they’ve found calm.
